Things were getting busy. Too busy. I was taking more and more time off work to trap moles, and my boss wasn't exactly thrilled about it. Eventually, I took the plunge, handed in my notice, and went full-time with pest control, focusing mainly on moles. By then, I had my own quad, was flying through jobs, and had a 90-95% catch rate.
Alan had already left his job and was doing moles full-time, so any spare days I had, I'd tow my bike up to him and we' clear farms together. But work wasn't always easy to come by at first, until I got a phone call from Arwyn Pritchard.
"Call up to the house and see me" he said. "i've been inspired to help you."
I popped in for a cuppa, and he asked for some business cards. Within 24 hours, he'd lined up almost 4,000 acres for me to trap. His words? "you better be good now that I've got you these jobs"
When I turned up, Richard, one of the farmers, said, "go have a go in that field and we'll see how you get on"
I just laughed. it doesn't work like that. I'll trap that field in 20 minutes, tell me where your boundaries are, and I'll do the lot today.
By the time I finished setting traps, I told them to put a bucket out, because there would be plenty caught by the end of the day. They always think you bring the moles with you when you pull 20-30 on the first day!
From there, word spread like wildfire. I was going from farm to farm, smashing through big numbers. I owe Arwyn a lot for that opportunity, he opened the door for this townie into the Vale of Glamorgan, and to this day, we run our business from his yard and we're great friends.
